This time last year we had lunch with a friend in NYC who brought along Justin Theroux. At the time he was bearded up and in leathers, black skinny jeans and biker boots and looked like any other good looking New York hipster. We found him to be funny and charming and really quite candid.

We didn’t realise until halfway through our sandwich that his last name was Theroux: that he was in fact the esteemed actor and screenwriter (and cousin of Louis). And strangely enough we’d both attended the same 30 people sit down dinner the night before. Talk about random.

Anyway – to see him become a Mr Aniston and thus total tabloid gold over the past year has been quite peculiar, not least for Theroux himself, we’d imagine. But we liked him then, we liked him in Sex and The City (twice), we liked him in Mullholland Drive and we’re excited to check out Wanderlust.

But having seen him breakdancing on American talkshow Ellen, well, what can we say? This man is quite clearly AWESOME. Jen’s one lucky lady!

Check it out!

Film junkets are a funny thing. You wait for hours to get your five minutes with the stars in a hot, claustrophobic room full of publicists, two cameramen, a make up artists and others.

From the second you walk in, the time keepers have the stop watch on, so five minutes actually turns into three minutes on camera time. It’s high pressure. It makes us perspire.

Chatting to some of the other film reporters in the holding room at the Soho Hotel (refreshments and pastry always on hand – thank goodness) we count our lucky stars that we live in London, just in terms of convenience.

One reporter from Ireland remarked: “Sometimes it does make you question your job when you get on a plane and travel all day for just five minutes of someone’s time.”

But time is money and the time of Hollywood stars is precious. Occasionally time stands still and you achieve an instant rapport (see our interview with Ryan Reynolds. Okay it had a lot to do with that cupcake we gave him).

Sometimes it can be uncomfortable in person, even if it’s not discernible on camera (Russell Crowe).

We know from interviewing Rachel McAdams for Morning Glory and Channing Tatum for The Eagle that both stars are extremely amenable so we were looking forward to talking about The Vow.

Based on a true story, The Vow finds an in love couple torn asunder by a car crash which leaves McAdams’ character without any memory of the past five years and indeed her husband, played by Tatum. It’s heartbreaking in places, funny in others, but it’s definitely a touching tale – made even more so knowing it’s anchored in a real life experience.

As soon as we walked in the door McAdams and Tatum began complimenting our choice of attire. First it was the dress (Topshop) and then the boots (Sergio Rossi) – it was overwhelming and so sweet!

Of course we loved what McAdams was wearing – especially the leather collar detailing on her lace dress. This is the moment (left) where we complimented her on the collar and Tatum pretended we were complimenting him on his blazer (we weren’t).

Cue – we start sweating and immediately regret the thermal underwear and extra thick tights. Time is ticking so we get down to it. Here’s the few questions that didn’t make the final FTRC edit.

This film is a beautiful love story – tell us what do you love about each other.
CT: “She has beautiful shy but giving thing about her.”

RM: “AW! Channing very much wears his heart on his sleeve and there’s such a purity and an honesty to that I think you brough that out so much in this character. It just makes the movie work. Without that we’d have nothing.”

Given that you’ve spent so much time together what bad habits have you observed about each other?
RM: “We both have the same bad habits: chewing gum.”
CT: “We chew gum a lot and tend to hide it under our tongues in scenes and then we’ll accidentally start chewing again in a scene.”

But not during a kissing scene?
RM: “Oh sure!”
CT: “Why not during a kissing scene?”

Well, because you might end up swapping gum.
Both: “Ew!”
CT: “We’ll get into little laughing fits.”
RM: “Yeah we’re kind of immature.”
CT: “Yeah our maturity level is not the highest of all people I would say.”

There are a fair few dates scenes. What’s the worst date you’ve ever been on?
RM: “We were talking about eating. Eating is not the best date.”
CT: “I haven’t dated all that much, I’ve just been in relationships and you have your date night and what not, movies are always a bad idea on the first date because you don’t ever end up understanding or learning if you enjoy being around this person because you’re just sitting next to someone in a dark room…”

RM: “We want everyone to go see our movie…” [Rachel puts her hand on his arm and starts laughing]
CT: “Awesome!
RM: Uh… every movie but ours! In our movie there’s long pauses where you can talk about things. Nice one!”

Short but sweet – and sadly cut off before we’d come anywhere near the end of our hardline (read: fluffy) questioning.

Dress: Topshop

Belt: Whistles

Watch & rings: vintage

Boots: Sergio Rossi

This week FTRC Film Club checked out the impressively-titled Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. But was it Extremely Good? Or Incredibly Bad?

Read on to find out…but beware those spoilers!

MARK ‘If I were to get jokey, Extremely Long and Incredibly Dull! It was just all so flat. I get that it was trying to be emotionless or conflicted, like the boy himself, but I just couldn’t connect with any of it. I felt nothing, and I almost cried at the Toy Story short before The Muppets!’

‘At the end I heard some folks loudly exclaim that they were annoyed they never found out what was in the box, I think that and Max Von Sydow not speaking kind of sum it up – it may have worked on the page as a story of emotional acceptance, but there wasn’t a lot to visually latch on to.’

ED ‘Extremely Anticipated and Incredibly Let Down. So surprised that the talent involved delivered such a mish mash of uninvolved, unemotional, annoying, tedious filmmaking.’

‘Sandra Bullock was wasted and Tom Hanks just silly. How you take one of the most emotional events in
recent history and not wring a single lump in the throat out I don’t know. I fell asleep I was so bored.’

‘The lad in it was amazing…he was playing a character with certain behaviourial traits and for that he should be commended. However as a character, with all that was going on it was incredibly hard to empathise and most I suspect, like me, just hated him. Such a shame.’

‘It seemed everything about this story was contrived to go for the emotional jugular and instead it was a horrible mess.’

CHRIS ‘Erm, well, two hours I’m never getting back!’

‘It felt like it was based around 9/11 to get an Oscar nod, Sandra Bullock was incredibly underused and the kid was really annoying. And Max Von Sydow didn’t speak but was still being the best thing in the film!

‘Hanks was his usual affable self.’

JAMES ‘I was very disappointed, it was too drawn out for my liking.’

‘Thomas Horn seemed almost uncomfortable at times, at first I didn’t mind him but as the film progressed he tended to get rather annoying. He has a very unemotional face (don’t know if that’s just me!)

‘I thought Hanks was, as usual, a reliable person to fill the role of ‘everyday family man’ and Bullock did what she could with very little. Unsure on Von Sydow’s performance, I thought he was good but nothing special to be honest.’

‘I just felt it dragged terribly. Even my mum, who watched it with me, was disappointed and she is a huge fan of ANYTHING with Tom Hanks in it.’

DAVE ‘Extremely Manipulative and Incredibly Annoying, The worst film of 2012 so far.’

‘Overall I felt the film was more the story of the city of New York coming together after the tragedy of 9/11 and that’s where it was at its strongest; the rest kind of fell flat for me.’

‘Plus I’m not sure why they needed to write the film with him (Oskar) having Asperger’s, surely coming to terms with your father’s death and 9/11 at that age is tough enough – it might worked without that element. Also it could have been shorter, although I don’t think that would have fixed what I disliked about it.’

MARK W ‘Wow, where do I start? This movie was ridiculously bad! Pulling on heart strings and near enough poking the audience to try and get them to cry!’

‘It is absolutely unforgivable that this has been nominated for Best Picture and so many great movies like Drive et al have been missed!’

‘The main kid in it was terribly grating and whether he was supposed to be autistic or not, he was annoying. Give me the kid from Mercury Rising any day over this one. A horrible film and two hours of my life I’ll never get back!’

KATIE ‘I enjoyed the film. I felt the little boy who played Oscar was a good little actor for someone so young, and Sandra Bullock was good when she was used. I do think Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock were probably cast to pull people in to watch the film though.’

SUZAN ‘I enjoyed it, I found it rather heart warming. Yes it was slightly longer than it needed to be but it was a sensitive story about loss and trying to hold onto someone.’

‘I thought Thomas Horn portrayed a child’s grief very well. He was a bit of a brat, but he had issues that he needed to work out.’

‘It wasn’t flat at all for me; it was an inspiring story of a boy trying to hold on to the memory of his dad. That was all the emotion needed; the quest was just a bonus.’

MATHEW ‘Extremely Boring and Incredibly, err, Boring. As soon as a heard Bono’s horrible voice used on the trailer I was already cringing, and that feeling pretty much continued throughout. Not for me.’

MIKE ‘I did not enjoy Horn’s performance. Very oddly written: he was a boy grieving, but rather than being confused and gaining sympathy from the audience, his obnoxious potty-mouthed behaviour made me think he was a bit of a brat.’

‘I don’t think there really was a plot, besides the boy trying to come to terms with his dad’s death and the expedition he sent him on. 9/11 was used quite shamefully (in my opinion) to try to illustrate loss. All it does is evoke anger, when it should have just been about a young boy losing his father.’

LOUISE ‘I enjoyed the film but I did find all of the 9/11 stuff very over the top, like the whole point of the film was just to try and make you cry.’

‘At some points I did kind of feel “does this film even have a plot”. OK so I guess it was to show this little boy and the impact 9/11 had on him and this awesome relationship he had with his dad but it was just a bit strange really.’

‘I do think it was an incredibly beautiful film though. Some of the shots were just gorgeous. Really for me it was the script or lack thereof that let it down. Great actors and great director.’

LYNN ‘I thought Thomas Horns’ performance was incredible, and in his first film too.

‘I liked all the performances from Hanks, Bullock and Von Sydow. You don’t always need them to be in every scene. The book and therefore the film is the boy’s narrative and how he sees everyone in his life. They were always going to be secondary to him, no matter who played the roles.’

‘I connected emotionally with it straight away. Oskar’s growth and how he dealt with his dad’s death was for me amazingly emotional.’

JEFF ‘In short, the kid is an annoying prick and the use of 9/11 amounts to no more than a cheap emotional short-cut.’

Wowsers – forget Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, that was Extremely Insightful and Incredibly Brutal, don’t you think?

Alas, we cannot give this movie a reprieve. Because it was poop. And all the Best Picture nominations in the world can’t change our minds.

It’s nicely shot – we are in a Stephen Daldry movie – but all the lush visuals in the world can’t make up for the fact that there’s just no plot, and what storyline is there stretches credulity. If Oskar is having such a tough time dealing with his dad’s death, why isn’t he seeing a counsellor? And how convenient is it that his mysterious mute pal just happens to be his long-lost granddad? Not to mention the fact that we JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT WAS IN THE DAMN BOX. *Deep breaths.*

ELAIC marks Thomas Horn’s movie debut (apparently he was scouted winning 30 grand on a game show), and he does a decent job. It’s not his fault Oskar is a difficult character to get behind – we totes understand that he’s just lost his dad, but there was something about his ‘acting out’ that didn’t connect and bordered on the bratty. Soz, but even kids in distress don’t get to be mean to Sandra Bullock. Not on our watch.

Also, as we’d quite like Tom Hanks to be our dad, we weren’t quite ready for that bit where he falls from the Twin Towers in super slo-mo.

Max von Sydow is probs the standout performer, despite not uttering a single word. And it was nice to see Viola Davis pop up briefly, as we’d forgotten she was in it.

This is the kind of movie that is designed to make you cry, but it just doesn’t get there. Even we left our Kleenex unopened, and we cry at cat videos on YouTube.

But just what is this Film Club malarkey all about? It’s simples, really.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is this week’s Film Club pick! As it stars both Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock, two of our favourite Hollywood peeps ever, we thought it was time to celebrate who we think are the most likeable folks in all moviedom.

So, without further ado, FTRC’s picks for Most Likely to be…well, Likeable. Who would you choose?

GEORGE CLOONEY Why do we love George? Not just because he’s gorgeous, oh no. We’re secretly hoping he’ll read this and invite us to his Italian villa as thanks for bigging him up.

On a more realistic note, George is pretty much the entire package. He’s got the aforementioned silver fox looks, bags of acting talent and he’s not too shabby in the writing/directing department either. Our favourite attribute? His ability to take the mick out of himself. Case in point – he bet Nicole Kidman and Michelle Pfeiffer 20 grand he wouldn’t have had kids by the time he was 50. We wonder if he’s paid up?

Plus, GC once owned a pet pig. We’re oddly into that. Has stated that he thought Batman and Robin was going to be a good movie. We’ll even forgive him the mammoth error that was Batman and Robin.

SANDRA BULLOCK Probably the most loveable female rom-commer in the history of Hollywood, there’s something about Sandra Bullock that makes all her characters, no matter how annoying, into people we really want to be BFFs with. No mean feat, considering she was in Miss Congeniality 2. And she modified her car with
special doggy seatbelts to keep her pooches safe! Some peeps might say that’s weird. We say it’s sweet.

Sandy B also donates like, a lot of moolah to charities. We like to think we’d do the same if we were raking in $20mil a movie. Another impressive Sandra-stat? She passed her bus driving test on the first attempt. Now that’s impressive!

Like George Clooney (who, incidentally, once threw her in a pool), Sandra’s not afraid to LOL at herself. She even accepted her Razzie Award in person, complete with a trolley of DVDs of the offending title. See her amaze acceptance speech here.

TOM HANKS Officially the nicest man in Hollywood, as evidenced by the record-breaking number of times he’s been voted as cinemagoers- favourite star. How has he done it? By playing a whole bunch of adoraballs characters, obvs. Forrest Gump? Uber-sweetheart. Cast Tom Hanks in a movie and you know you’re getting an upstanding citizen.

Tom also footed part of the $400,000 bill to renovate his old high school theatre. And he’s related to Abraham Lincoln, which is kinda cool. Also, you just know that any man who owns 80 typewriters is going to be boss. If he adopted us tomorrow we’d be chuffed.

JULIA ROBERTS Is it possible not to like someone whose smile is that wide? We don’t think so. Jules’ gnashers are so ridonkulously perfect that when scientists discovered a 9000 year old skeleton with equally tombstone-like teeth, they named it in her honour.

After getting her big break playing a hooker with a heart in Pretty Woman, Ms Roberts went on to establish herself as THE romantic lead every actor wants to star with. That ‘just a girl’ moment in Notting Hill? Mind-meltingly cute. She’s no slouch, either; picking up an Oscar in 2001 for Erin Brockovich.

She’s also stated that the reason she likes wearing hats is so she doesn’t have to wash her hair. Gross, but so unHollywood we can’t help but high five her for it.

DREW BARRYMORE Yeah, so she was probably the teenager from hell, but if anything that just makes us love Drew more for turning it around and coming out awesome. She’s cute, funny, talented and has the cutest lisp in Hollywood.

Plus, when she found out a 23 year old girl wanted to have surgery to look like her, she called her up personally and talked her out of it. How nice is that?

Need more evidence? Drew gave David Letterman a really awesome birthday present back in 1995. She flashed him her boobs. On TV.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is out now. Here’s the trailer:

But just what is this Film Club malarkey all about? It’s simples, really.

A new international trailer for GI Joe sequel Retaliation has arrived! Naturally, there are lots of bangs.

What can we say? It looks like we can expect amazing special effects, grunting and Bruce Willis. Hopefully some great comedy too, if the few quips we see here are anything to go by. But will it be better than Joe’s first outing?

Gi Joe: Retaliation is released in the UK on 22 June. Will you be checking it out?

Here at FTRC we mega-heart Nicolas Cage. We really do.

Yeah, so he’s made some lulzy choices in the last few years (Drive Angry, anyone? Season of the Witch?) but Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is sure to see him back on top of the box office….right?

Of course it is. So let’s celebrate the man, the voice, the legend, the best way we know how. With a nice bit of trivia.

Cagey’s actual name is Nicolas Kim Coppola. Changed it to Cage to make his own way in the business.

Francis Ford Coppola is his uncle. You probably got that from the name thing.

His first film was Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Alas, his part was cut.

He’s nothing if not a fast mover. Nic married his current wife Alice Kim 2 months and 4 days after divorcing previous Mrs Cage, Lisa Marie Presley. He proposed to first missus Patricia Arquette the day he met her (she said no, but it still counts)

Used to live in a fake castle. Lifelong dream? To live in a real one, natch. He plans to import one – they don’t have castles in the US of A.

Nic ate a real cockroach for Vampires Kiss. We doubt anyone wanted to kiss him after that…

Named his son Kal-El, after Superman. We bet there’s not many of those in his class!

Played Helen Hunt’s dad in Peggy Sue Got Married, despite being younger than her. We’d be so offended if that were us. And it was Uncle Frank who cast him!

Weirdly, he’s responsible for Johnny Depp’s acting career. He recommended him to his agent over a game of Monopoly.

Covered LMFAO’s Sexy And I Know It during a recent radio interview. Listen to it here. It’s so perfect.

Nicolas was recently accused of being an immortal vampire (see pic at left). Unsurprisingly, he denies it.

Turned down Jeff Daniels’ role in Dumb and Dumber. We’ve tried, but we just can’t imagine him with his tongue stuck to a ski lift.

Snorted baby powder for his cocaine scenes in Bad Lieutenant. Which probably sounds way more pleasant than it actually is.

Our fave ever Cageism: ‘I am not a demon. I am a lizard, a shark, a heat-seeking panther. I want to be Bob Denver on acid playing the accordion.’ Ideas for what the hell he’s going on about on a postcard, please.

Finally, here’s a pic of Nicolas Cage sitting on a weird Gothic throne, courtesy of Moviefone. Why not?
