The Luck of the Irish
Total Recall is this week’s Film Club champion! Time to celebrate the career of one Colin Farrell, we think:
PHONE BOOTH Once director Joel Schumacher got done ruining the Batman franchise single-handed, he moved on to launching the career of one Colin Farrell. After giving him his big break in gritty 2000 flick Tigerland, the pair reteamed for Phone Booth, a thriller about a not-so-nice guy who finds himself trapped by a sniper. The most impressive part of all this? It’s essentially a one-man show, carried Atlas-style on Farrell’s shoulders.
Interesting and kinda random fact: both Jim Carrey and Will Smith were considered for Col’s part.
IN BRUGES LOL. Easily one of our favourite movies of 2008, In Bruges is a hilarious crime caper about two hitmen types who go into hiding in the Belgium tourist town of Bruges. Presumably because literally no one will look for them there. Hysteria abounds when Colin Farrell’s hitman falls in love while becoming BFFs with a drug-abusing celebrity “midget”. Yep, that really is the plot.
In Bruges is a great Farrell movie because it shows off his comedy chops to perfection. Something he built on in our next pick…
HORRIBLE BOSSES One of a spate of similarly-bawdy comedies released last summer, this one stands out from the crowd. While still not great, it’s worth checking out for Ireland’s biggest Hollywood export alone, as he plays a fat, balding, coke-sniffing, prostitute-enthusiast sort of boss. He’s not in it nearly enough, but when he is he’s perfectly zany.
This flick is also worthy of inclusion on the list as it showcases just how willing Col is to take on any part. There ain’t many Hollywood heavyweights who’d be comfortable rocking that combover!
THE WAY BACK We reckon that approximately ten people worldwide saw this movie, but what the hell. Despite a criminally dodgy ending, it’s pretty damn good. Directed by Peter Weir, it tells the story of a bunch of prisoners who escape from a Siberian prison during World War II. Farrell plays a gangster who scares the bejeezus out of people (or alternatively, bumps them off) in order to get his way and turns in our favourite performance of the whole lot. Huzzah!
Total Recall is out now. Here’s the trailer:
But just what is this Film Club malarkey all about? It’s simples, really. Each week we send a pair of cinema tix (ODEON or Cineworld, whichever is best) to 10 of our most active Facebook/Twitter followers. We put the film we’re going to see to the vote, and the winning film is the one we all go to see. Then we all sit around on Facebook on the Sunday night (6.30) and chat about it. Magic. Sound like something you want to get involved with? Drop us a line at twitter.com/f_t_r_c or on Facebook at on.fb.me/d4dMv8
