The Perks of being in Film Club
Last week FTRC Film Club headed out to see coming-of-age book adaptation The Perks of Being a Wallflower. What they found rather surprised them…spoilers ahead!
DAVE ‘It blew me away. Me and the wife loved it!’
‘Emma Watson was fantastic, really loved her. It took me a few minutes to shake off Hermione (we did see her for ten years in that role) but I think she has a bright future if this is anything to go by. The main guy (Logan Lerman), who I don’t think I’ve come across before was superb too.’
‘I’ve only seen two of Ezra Miller’s films and I’m well impressed! He’s played both a horrible bastard and a lovable misunderstood campy chap – let us hope his future films are just as well-acted.’
‘It’s definitely one of the best teen films I’ve seen…it works on so many more levels than just as a teen flick though. I felt it tied in messages about hope as well, the end of it all I felt the whole film was just a message of hope and really uplifting.’
‘A fantastic film with brilliant acting. One of my favourites of the year right now.’
CHRIS ‘Fantastic and heartwarming.’
‘Emma Watson is going to be so A-List its unreal. She was brilliant, I can see a fair few Oscars in her future.’
‘I’ve not seen Ezra Miller in anything else yet, but I thought he was really good in this. I would need to see him in a few more things though before I decide how good he really is!’
‘It was an emotional film, and the sensitive issues were handled …er…sensitively. The flashbacks throughout were a good way of introducing the reveal.’
‘I haven’t read the book but it can’t have hindered the film having the author do the screenplay as he clearly stuck to the source material more than an outsider would.
‘I really enjoyed the film. Emma Watson has a BIG career ahead of her and now I’m off to watch Ezra Miller in There’s Something About Kevin!’
MARNY ‘I really enjoyed The Perks of Being a Wallflower.’
‘I was a bit apprehensive about seeing Emma Watson in a non-Harry Potter film, however she did brilliantly in this. She will easily be recognised as an actress in her own right and not just as Hermione Granger.’
‘Ezra Miller is definitely worthy of the praise he gets. He did an excellent job in We Need To Talk About Kevin and played the role of Patrick brilliantly. Logan Lerman in the character of Charlie was very good too.’
‘The storyline was very strong. The implied child abuse story was portrayed very well although it was slightly disturbing and made me weep.’
‘This is very accurate in terms of the issues teenagers face and it’s done in a mature manner. It’s much better than the normal teen movies shown these days, and an excellent movie overall.’
‘This has turned out to be one of my favourite films for this year which has taken me by surprise – I didn’t expect this one!’
IVAI ‘Certainly not the type of film I’d normally watch, but a pleasant surprise.’
‘Emma Watson did tremendously well, but the whole saga of her character being abused as a child was only half believable for me.’
‘Logan Lerman did well to carry the film. I felt his struggles were well presented and not over the top and the reveal, well, I didn’t see that coming!’
‘This was a nice watch and it felt real compared to other teen movies. It was a nice surprise and I’m glad it won Film Club otherwise I don’t think I’d have checked it out.’
LYNN ‘I went into Perks of Being a Wallflower thinking it would be light and fluffy, however the film used such deep themes and had such strong performances that it took me completely by surprise.’
‘Logan Lerman was wonderful as Charlie, I completely believed in him and his problems. However, it was Ezra Miller who stole the whole film for me. If ever they remake The Rocky Horror Picture Show then they need look no further than Ezra to play Dr Frank-N-Furter!’
‘I can’t praise this fabulous film highly enough. The way in which it delicately handles such heavy subjects as abuse and mental illness is a joy to watch. If this is an accurate reflection on how the book is written, then it is no wonder the film is so heavily attended.’
‘An excellent film that I could and would watch repeatedly.’
SCOTT ‘I was actually pleasantly surprised. This is not a film I would normally choose for myself, but I found it heartwarming and well performed. I have not read the book so knew little of the story which I think added to my enjoyment.’
‘I found the plot interesting and it was handled extremely well for such a sensitive issue. I was shocked and never saw the ending coming, which is a nice change. Hollywood films these days seem to think we want it all laid out for us on a silver platter.’
‘It was nice to see more ‘real’ life issues handled and given exposure. So often teen movies focus on what they think we want to see, and not the real things that kids go through. So in that sense it was a completely refreshing change.’
‘I’d rank this very highly indeed, not only with other teen films released this year, but with ALL films released this year (that I’ve seen).’
‘Not really a film I would normally go out of my way to see, but I am very glad I did! A must-watch.’
