Who is the Captain of comic-book movies?
Captain America: The First Avenger has officially made it. He’s knocked Harry Potter from the top of the US box office and now he’s coming for the UK. Plus, he’s FTRC Film Club’s Pick of the Week. Huzzah!
Now as we all know there are so many comic book flicks about these days that there just aren’t enough actors to star in them all. Guess that explains why so many actors (including Captain America himself) are doubling up (they probs quite like the costumes, too) Let’s take a look-see…
CHRIS EVANS – before he went mega as The First Avenger, Chris had a comic adventure of a different sort – the Fantastic Four movies. Which weren’t very good but they made him pretty famous so he’s probs not too bothered. Chris played ridonkuously named Four member Johnny Storm – whose catchphrase was the equally stupid ‘Flame On’ – and he didn’t even get to pash Jessica Alba! (his character was her brother. Just wrong) He did, however, get to turn into fire. Imagine the money that would save on central heating.
Not that he needs to worry about that – he’s signed for six Cap movies! Should keep him in protein shakes for a while. Gotta maintain those hero biceps…even if he is digitally slimmed for half the movie. We’d be well miffed if that was us.
Oh – and we liked him in Scott Pilgrim too. Boy gets around…
RYAN REYNOLDS – this guy’s CV reads like a who’s who of the comics world. R.I.P.D. Green Lantern. Deadpool. X-Men Origins. Blade. Is he going for some sort of world record? Or maybe he just wants his future grandkids to think he’s, like, the most badass old guy in the universe. (If this is what he’s going for, the rumoured Green Lantern sequel needs to never happen. No one will think that’s cool)
We’re noticing that even though RyRey’s resume is stacked with comics he’s only ever played one superhero. If he’s going to keep this up there need to be more. Nothing to do with wanting to see him wear more Lycra, either. (Green Lantern doesn’t count. That was CGI)
HUGH JACKMAN – Not really a serial offender as he keeps playing the same character – but we know a few peeps who were upset by that Origins flick so we’re including him. Plus he’s now doing his fifth Wolverine flick (sixth if you count his sweary X-Men: First Class cameo) so that has to count for something. Six movies? He might as well change his name to Hugh X-Man (see what we did there? Wow we make a good bad joke.)
Seriously, though. If Hugh makes many more Wolverine movies he’s going to turn into him. He needs to be careful he doesn’t start growling at his wife and kids.
MORGAN FREEMAN – We thought Morgan Freeman would be too busy being, like, the most respected actor ever to get involved in all this comics nonsense. Apparently not. Morgan popped up in Batman Begins in 2005, came back for Dark Knight and is currently filming third instalment The Dark Knight Rises. Either he thinks Christian Bale looks really good in a mask or he hearts Chris Nolan to the max.
And it’s not just Bat movies – Sir Freeman also appeared in CIA retirement jaunt RED, where he was joined by other acting greats such as Helen Mirren and John Malkovich. Bruce Willis doesn’t count, he’s been kickass forever. That’s three Oscar nominees in one comic. Who’d have thunk it?
NB. There are loads more actorly peeps who’ve appeared in multiple comic book movies. Tommy Lee Jones, Nicolas Cage, Mark Strong….if we’ve missed your fave feel free to let us know.
But just what is this Film Club malarkey all about? It’s simples, really. Each week we send a pair of cinema tix (ODEON or Cineworld, whichever is best) to 10 of our most active Facebook/Twitter followers. We put the film we’re going to see to the vote, and the winning film is the one we all go to see. Then we all sit around on Facebook on the Sunday night (6.30) and chat about it. Magic. Sound like something you want to get involved with? Drop us a line at twitter.com/f_t_r_c or on Facebook at on.fb.me/d4dMv8
